A letter from your mirror

Have you ever seen the way

An infant

Meets their reflection for the first time

Their face focusing

The same way your first

Love looked

The first time

They said

They were falling for you.

Well baby,

This ain’t one of those times.

This is going to be

Your most complicated math equation

That you never seem to be able to solve

Staring back at you

Pupils sitting like decimals

Punctuating sentences

That sit in your head

But would never feel right

Coming out of your mouth.

Pause,

Why is it

That you place mirrors

On walls,

To make your space seem bigger,

To make your world feel limitless

yet when you stand in front

Somehow confused

You try to shrink

As though I didn’t just give you

The opportunity

To feel larger than life.
