When I was younger.

I remember my mother walking me through,

How to write a thank you letter.

I used to think thank you letters were dumb.

I still think they’re a little dumb. 

They overcomplicate things.

Human demonstrations of gratitude,

But I think we’ve gotten so used to speaking hollow words

We need to fill up pages,

Just to make sure

We insert meaning 

Back into love.
